Audience Development Plans

Audience Development Plan – River Lambourn Urban Restoration Project
We worked with Resources for Change to complete an Audience Development Plan for the final 2.5km of the River Lambourn as it flows through Newbury, Berkshire. The plans will support a bid in the region of £1 million to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project aims to bring improvements to a locally important green space as well as providing an opportunity to increase awareness of the river’s place in local history and its significant heritage value. It will provide a valuable educational opportunity to raise awareness of issues surrounding the way society interacts with local freshwater environments. A key aim of the work with the Pang, Kennet & Lambourn Valley Countryside Project was to carry out consultation with existing and missed audiences which will lead to increased community involvement with the site.

Hylton Castle & Dene Audience Development Plan
We assisted R4C in the production of an ADP for Hylton Castle & Dene. Hylton Castle and Hylton Dene are located in Sunderland and the castle is one of the oldest secular buildings in the City and Hylton Dene is a popular park that is of recreational value and ecological interest.

Audience Development Plan – RSPB Rainham Marshes
Carried out research to produce an Access and Audience Development Plan for Rainham, Wellington and Aveley Marshes RSPB Nature Reserve for a Heritage Lottery Grant Application (now approved). The study included an analysis of current audiences, analysis of the barriers to participation, setting objectives for audience development with priority audiences and measurable targets and developing an action plan to achieve objectives for each target audience.

Audience Development Plan – Wat Tyler Country Park
We completed an Audience Development Plan for Wat Tyler Country Park in support of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant application. Our work involved carrying out a market assessment (including primary research), identifying barriers which discouraged some potential visitor groups and suggesting ways to increase visitor levels.

Alasdair Hagger an Associate has worked on a number of Audience Development Plan projects, whilst at Haley Sharpe Design, which are set out below.

Boston Guildhall (for Haley Sharpe Design)
Boston Guildhall is a key local landmark and audience consultation was a key element in the development of the interpretive and design approach for this Grade 1 Listed building. A comprehensive programme of consultation was undertaken including Visitor and Non-Visitor Surveys and Focus Group consultations with key stakeholder, audience and education groups.

Lancashire Yarns Project (for Haley Sharpe Design)
The Designated collections of the Museum of the Lancashire Textile Industry (MLTI) are displayed at Helmshore Textile Museums and Queen Street Mill. As a result of Designation, funding was achieved to improve the interpretation and care of the collections. One of the conditions of the award was the production of an Outline Interpretation Strategy. In order to develop a suitable Interpretation Strategy, I co-ordinated and led a comprehensive audience research programme establishing the needs, wants and opinions of current and potential visitors to MLTI. I subsequently produced an Access and Interpretation Review that was used as the basis for an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (for Haley Sharpe Design)
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is one the two hub museums of The Highlands and is one of the key cultural centres of the City of Inverness. As part of the development of the museum carried out by Haley Sharpe Design, there was a clear need to consult with visitors and non-visitors in Inverness and the Highlands. The consultation process I managed set out to try and ensure that the proposals reflected the needs of visitors and enabled views to be incorporated in the final plans. The research included an Exit Survey at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, General User and Non-User Visitor Survey at six Highland locations, Focus Group sessions and consultations with local schools.
